Tickle College of Engineering
2022 Annual Report
A Message from the Dean
There’s never been a better time to be on Rocky Top.
For the 22-23 academic year, the Tickle College of Engineering has set records for undergraduate and graduate student enrollment, female and historically underrepresented student enrollment, research expenditures, patents filed and issued, and facilities, highlighted by the 228,000 square-foot Zeanah Engineering Complex. This incoming group of students also boasted an impressive overall GPA 0f 4.20. And that’s just the beginning.
Over the next three years, we anticipate the hire of over 30 new faculty, in both Knoxville and at the Space Institute (UTSI) in Tullahoma, in strategic strength areas including artificial intelligence, hypersonics, energy storage, human mobility, and medical physics.
These records might be the most obvious signs of the momentum we have created, but the signs of our continuing transformation into a global engineering powerhouse are everywhere.
This report showcases just a handful of examples to show how TCE is on the move, and strategically positioning itself to provide even greater impact on the state and globe through our world-class research, education and outreach programs.
Simply put, there’s never been a better time to be an Engineering Vol.

Development Update
Dear friends of the Tickle College of Engineering,
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your commitment to provide valuable resources to help us educate the next generation of Tennessee engineers. In fiscal year 2022, you gave over $33M because you believe in the premise that engineers are uniquely able to change the world for the better and that higher education is the key that opens the door to our students’ unlimited potential.
To all of you, we want to say that we are thankful for your contributions, which gives us the leverage to achieve sustainable progress for our state, region, and nation. With that in mind, we look forward to redoubling our efforts next year—together with you and as part of our engineering family.
Wishing you all the best!
Go Vols!
